The safety belt of the engine. Along with multiple patents and unique technology, the invention of the serpentine belt is credited to GATES. This innovation laid the foundation for Gates' future. Gates develops complete belt drives in close collaboration with automakers. As a result, Gates supplies the oil pump system for the Audi R8 and the drive belt for BMW’s latest Start-Stop system. Gates was commissioned by Ducati, as the belt drive expert, to solve the camshaft belt tension issue in the V2 engine. Previously, this engine had to be serviced every 5000 km due to the belt tension.
The latest developments have replaced chloroprene (a rubber derivative) with EPDM to make the belts, which are more durable and better resistant to the increased thermal load of the engine. This represents a technological shift, similar to when lightweight metal frames were replaced by carbon. Their latest product is the Stretch Belt, a ribbed belt without a tensioner that is flexible in its material.
